The location of the house is si mply spectacular. It is in the middle of nature, surrounded by trees and snow, right in front of an icy lake. The environment makes you feel completely part of the landscape, as if nature embraced you at every moment. It is a perfect place to disconnect, enjoy the silence and live a unique experience in a magical environment.

In addition, the northern lights that we have been able to see have exceeded all our expectations. It has been an unforgettable show that has made the experience even more special.

"A Week I'll Never Forget"

I went to Lapland excited to go on a hunting trip in what I had heard was an untouched landscape. Due to illness in the family I ended up traveling alone, and though I have seen much of America with its vast mountain ranges and deep forests, nothing could have prepared me for the jaw-dropping beauty I encountered as soon as I got off the plane in Ivalo. Driving to Villa Sarmi, reindeer were crossing the road. I even missed my exit because I was too focused on the landscape.

You get to Villa Sarmi by boat, and my ride was Mika N., who during my stay ended up becoming a true friend, even inviting me into his home for a traditionall kahvi ja pulla. If Finns are supposed to be quiet and reserved, Mika didn't get the memo, because he was so welcoming, and who also took me fishing and hare hunting. His knowledge of Lapland is better than any encyclopedia, and he cooks dinner quickly and easily anywhere when you get hungry.

The cabin was as promised, remote, but so beautiful and not lacking a thing. After long days outside it felt heavenly to heat the sauna and dip into the lake.

Autentic Boreal were so organized with the hunting trips. Everything went according to schedule and as promised, and the guides were clearly at home. The dogs were well-trained and performed impeccably, I was most impressed.

I never wanted to leave. (Actually, I want to move to Lapland, just need to get the missus onboard with the plan...) It is a truly wild land, and the men and women who live there are simply put, good people. I've never felt so welcomed nor so at home. Nothing about my trip felt touristy, though I was a tourist from Florida. Everyone were so hospitable and out in the wilderness, hunting and fishing, it felt like you created true bonds with the people. I can't wait to go back and experience more seasons, hike more, hunt different animals and see the people I met again.

This was a week I'll never forget. And as much as I want to help Autentic Boreal to grow, I don't want too many people to know about it either....

Into the Arctic Wild

Our adventure took us to Finland’s far north, where we were greeted by breathtaking northern lights before arriving in Inari. The mission? Moose hunting in the vast Arctic wilderness, guided by Pekka and his amazing Karelian bear dog, Onni. With a little help of modern satellite tracking, we explored the untouched terrain while honoring ethical hunting traditions.

The journey was no walk in the park—dense forests, marshy grounds, and hard-to-spot moose pushed us to our limits. But the effort was worth it for the incredible views, the thrill of the chase, and the evenings spent unwinding in true Finnish style: a blazing sauna, a plunge into the icy lake, and feasts of local specialties like smoked trout and capercaillie.

On the final day, with a change in tactics, Onni’s skillful tracking brought us close to a moose. But the Arctic reminded us of its power—nature doesn’t give in easily! This experience was more than a hunt; it was a test of resilience, respect for wildlife, and a deep dive into Lapland’s beauty.

Into the heart of Finnish wilderness

This January we took on Finland’s legendary "Top Jakt" – a thrilling hunt for black grouse and capercaillie in the frozen expanse of the Arctic. Skiing off-piste through deep snow and -24°C temperatures, we navigated endless forests and icy bogs, armed with precision gear and plenty of determination.

Evenings brought well-earned relaxation with traditional Finnish saunas, hearty meals of local delicacies, like zander fillets and mushroom soup, shared around cozy hunting shelters. After three intense days, we finally secured a black grouse, with a spectacular capercaillie encounter to cap off the adventure.

It’s more than a hunt – The combination of physical endurance, respect for nature, and the warmth of Finnish hospitality makes this a truly unforgettable adventure.

Une merveilleuse rencontre dans la nature

Jarmo Helander, partenaire d'Autentic Boreal Oy, est né et vit à Utsjoki. Il participe depuis longtemps au projet de protection et de sauvetage du renard arctique, espèce gravement menacée.

Il y a quelques temps, un samedi d'hiver en février, il était à nouveau en motoneige dans la région sauvage de Paistunturi lorsqu'il a pu apprécier les résultats de son travail dans la pratique :

"J'ai trouvé une carcasse dans la nature où des renards arctiques et des renards s'étaient nourris. J'ai suivi leurs traces et j'ai vu que quelque chose avait été creusé dans la congère à environ un kilomètre de là."

Je me suis approché et j'ai été surpris de voir un bec noir sortir de la neige. Le renard arctique, qui s'était retiré dans les congères, me regardait calmement. Ne voulant pas le déranger trop longtemps, j'ai rapidement pris quelques photos et je suis reparti. Une rencontre incroyable et mémorable, dit Helander, qui a vu et vécu beaucoup de choses dans la nature sauvage.

In the last sentence it says "un bec noir" and that's the translation of the English text, but if it was a mammal we're not talking about a beak (that's for birds) but a snout.

So if you want to change, it would be better to write: "Je me suis approché et j'ai été surpris de voir un museau noir sortir de la neige. »

A wonderful encounter in the wilderness

Jarmo Helander, a partner of Autentic Boreal Oy, who was born and lived in Utsjoki, has been involved in the protection and rescue project of the critically endangered arctic fox for a long time.

Sometimes ago, on a winter Saturday in February, he was once again on a snowmobile in the Paistunturi wilderness area when he was able to enjoy the results of his work in practice:

“I found a carcass in the wilderness where arctic foxe and foxe had been feeding. I followed their tracks and saw something had been dug into the snowdrift about a kilometer away.

I drove closer and was amazed when a black beak peeked out of the snow. The arctic fox, which had retreated into the snowdrifts, looked at me calmly. Not wanting to disturb it for long, I quickly took a few pictures and drove away. An incredible and memorable encounter, says Helander, who has seen and experienced a lot in the wilderness nature."

Voyage de chasse de la compagnie Ruoto Oy aux lagopèdes dans la région sauvage de Paistunturi.

Au cours de la première semaine d'octobre 2023, nous avons reçu un groupe de chasseurs finlandais de la plus grande société de chasse et de pêche de Finlande, Ruoto Oy, pour une chasse aux lagopèdes dans la région de Paistunturi.

La première neige tombée dans la nuit a recouvert les plus hauts sommets des montagnes et le soleil d'automne éblouissait les yeux.

Les lagopèdes ont bien été trouvés par les chiens, deux setters anglais Jimi et Molli, et le braque allemand Jätkä qui ont fait ce pour quoi ils ont été entraînés.

Et comme les invités furent adroits, nous avons pû profiter d'un merveilleux dîner de gélinottes.

Bien entendu, nous apprécions également la vapeur du sauna de notre base sauvage de Birkejänkä et l'eau fraîche du ruisseau avant de passer à table.

Ruoto Oy grouse hunting trip to Paistunturi wilderness area

In the first week of October 2023, we received a group from Finland's largest hunting and fishing equipment company, Ruoto Oy, for a grouse hunt in the Paistunturi wilderness.

The first snow that fell during the night covered the highest peaks of the fells, and the bright autumn sunshine dazzled the eye. Grouses were well found and dogs, two English setters Jimi and Molli, and German standoff Sisu did what they were created and trained for. While the guests were still finishing the events as they had learned, we were able to enjoy a wonderful grouse dinner. Of course, we also enjoy the steam of the sauna at our wilderness base Birkejänkä, and the fresh water of the fell stream before moving on to the dinner table.

"One of the most amazing hunting trips of my life so far," said Joonas Oksanen, CEO of Ruoto Oy, after the trip. The people at Autentic Boreal thank you for these wonderful words that warm the mind of an experienced hunter. Hope to see you again in the autumn!

Pouvons-nous proposer des expériences complètement nouvelles?

Pourrait on offrir quelque chose de nouveau à un homme parti chasser dans plus de 20 pays ?

Jean Christophe Marmara, journaliste expérimenté du magazine français Voyages de Chasse, était notre invité en Laponie. Durant une semaine,

il a découvert la chasse au grand tétras, au tétras et a l’élan.

La chasse s'est déroulée comme une chasse traditionnelle aux chiens.

Le grand tétras, était chassé à la fois avec un Spitz finlandais Urho. L'oiseau levé et poursuivi par le chien jusqu'à la pose dans un arbre. Le chien est ensuite au ferme et l’approche est possible grâce aux aboiements. Une forme de chasse passionnante avec une très longue tradition en Finlande. Le Spitz finlandais est donc le chien national de la Finlande.

Seconde forme de chasse plus classique au chien d’arrêt avec un braque Allemand. Nous avons chassé l’élan avec un chien d’ours de Carélie nommé Onni. Dans cette forme de chasse passionnante, le chien cherche à suivre et à arrêter l'élan en aboyant au ferme. Ce grand cervidé marche souvent lorsque le chien aboie devant la ligne de tir du chasseur.

Could we offer completely new experiences?

Could we offer something new to a man who has gone hunting in more than 20 countries?

Jean Cristophe Marmara, an experienced journalist for the French hunting travel magazine Voyage de Chasse, was our guest in Lapland. During the week, we got acquainted with capercaillie, grouse and elk hunting.

The hunt took place as a traditional dog hunt.

The bird, mainly capercaillie, was hunted with both the Finnish Spitz Urho and with German pointer Wäärti. Barked bird at a tree is exciting form of hunting and it has a very long tradition in Finland and so the Finnish Spitz is Finland's national dog.

We hunted elk with Karelian bear dog Onni. In this exciting form of hunting, the dog seeks to follow and stop the moose by barking. Moose often walk when the dog barks at the hunter's firing line.

And then the answer to our question... Let's let the picture tell how we succeeded in creating new experiences.
